5 Reasons to Love Eurail

Every time I’ve been to Europe I’ve invested in a Eurail pass. They’re great, there’s so many options with them! If you would like to read up on if Eurail Passes are worth it, head over to Nomadic Matt here and read up on his mathematic conclusion proving that Eurail is a great value. Here are my 5 reasons to love Eurail passes.

1. The Global Pass

Going to Europe and don’t have a set plan? Get Eurail’s Global Pass. Within the bounds of the Global Pass you have options. You can travel continuously for as few as 15 days and all the way up to 3 months! There is also the option of 5 days within 10days, and 10 or 15 days within 2 months. The global pass will get you around in 28 countries! I have opted for the Global Pass on two different backpacking trips to Europe.

2. Free & Discounted Ferry Tickets.

Need to use a ferry?

Want to travel by sea? Eurail passes offer pass benefits that will get you discounts, and on a few ferries free. I took a what I thought was a ferry from Rome to Barcelona and only paid $20 in addition to using my Eurail Pass. It ended up being more of an actual cruise ship. Can’t beat a $20 cruise between two of Europe’s famed cities.

3. Freedom to wander, stop at random places.

This is how you end up in Chiasso, Switzerland

The great thing about a Eurail pass is that you can stop off wherever you want. So if you’re on a train and you happen to be in a beautiful area, you can get off at the next stop and explore. You aren’t held down to rigid plans. You’ll end up some strange places this way.

4. Different pass options.

I visited Nurenburg, Germany via a Select Pass.

Traveling only in one region? Only going to one country? They cover this. Eurail has many options in addition to the Global Pass, including 1-5 country passes for different amounts of days, Regional passes and Select passes. Out of these I have done the select pass. You pick 4 bordering countries and the amount of time you need. Click here to compare passes.

5. All sorts of discounts.

Your Eurail pass gets you all kinds of discounts depending on what country you’re in. From hostel discounts to free admission into attractions and more! Eurail even gives a breakdown for every country showing what discounts you get and where. Click here to research what discounts you Eurail pass will get you.

Barcelona, after my discounted ferry from Rome!

So there it is. 5 reasons to love Eurail.

Now I will tell you a disclaimer. You still must pay for seat reservations and sleeper car reservations. However, this extra expense can be easily avoided by not going on routes that require reservations. Most popular routes, and some routes at specified times of day will require reservations.
